Dr. Martinez is the owner of Psychotherapy Practice Solutions, LLC, a private mental health practice agency offering supervision of graduate social workers and professional counselors for State Licensing; continuing education in mental health practice ethics, confidentiality, dual relationships, and jurisprudence issues; business management and organization; and consultation with mental health professionals involved in malpractice or regulatory grievance actions. Dr. Martinez is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the former program director for the Mental Health Licensing and Regulatory Programs in Colorado. He has published articles in “The Forensic Therapist,” “Ethics and Behavior,” and “Deviant Behavior: An Interdisciplinary Journal” and teaches graduate courses in Business and Counseling for Argosy University in Denver, Colorado. 

Robert A. Lees, J.D.

Attorney Robert A. Lees of Robert A. Lees & Associates practices in the areas of litigation and appellate matters at the local, State, and Federal level. His areas of expertise include corporate formation, all business transactions, asset protection, debtor-creditor relations, regulatory (administrative) law, mental health practice law, zoning, non-profit organizations, education, and securities litigation. Mr. Lees has lectured for various education programs including “Colorado Non-Profits: Tax and Business Answers,” and “Counselor’s & Therapist’s Risk Prevention.” He was a Deputy District Attorney and Special Prosecutor for the 12th Judicial District. Mr. Lees appears in the Martindale Hubbell Register of Pre-eminent Attorneys and Who’s Who in American Law. Since 1996, Mr. Lees has also worked with several international agencies on child protection issues.

Lon Kopit, Psy.D.

Dr. Lon Kopit holds a Psy. D. degree from the University of Denver in Clinical Psychology. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado and has lectured on the role of the Special Advocate, Child and Family Investigations, and child and family psychology. Dr. Kopit has been in private practice for over 34 years with a specialty in Child and Family Investigations.

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate degree in a Behavioral or Social Science and 2 years of work experience in a setting involving direct contact with children, youth, or families. OR a Graduate degree in a Behavioral or Social Science.
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
 
Students must attend each class and complete on-line or take home class assignments to qualify for the certificate program. Make-up sessions may be available at the discretion of the instructor. A certificate of participation for contact hours in attendance will be issued to students who do not complete the 40 hours of training.

CLASSES IN COLORADO SPRINGS ARE TAUGHT AT THE HILTON GARDEN INN, 1810 BRIARGATE PARKWAY, COLORADO SPRINGS, CO 80920 (I-25 EXIT 151)

TUITION IS $1150 for the 40 hr. program. For groups of six or more participants from the same agency or institution, tuition is $1000 for the 40 hr. program.
 
FEE IS $350 per course if taken separately.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Module 1—10 contact hours. The American Legal System.
Faculty Instructor: Robert A. Lees, J.D.


This course provides an overview of local, State, and Federal Courts, their jurisdiction, rules of procedure, and social organization. The role of judges, prosecutors, attorneys, and other participants in the criminal and civil justice system is studied with special attention to domestic relations, child abuse & neglect, juvenile delinquency proceedings, and the role of the Child and Family Investigator.

Module 2- 10 contact hours. Child and Family Investigation Methods.
Faculty Instructor: Lon Kopit, Psy.D., LPC


This class examines the various fact collection and interviewing methods used to complete a child and family investigation. Individual interviews, interviewing the couple, interviewing the child (or children), home visits, observations of parent-child interaction, and the use of professional and personal references in the fact finding process are explored. The session also reviews the collection and presentation of facts in a child and family investigation report with special attention to developing a parenting plan.

Module 3- 10 contact hours. Family Systems.
Faculty Instructor: To be Assigned

Considers the major forces involved in the contemporary American family. The course examines major models of marriage and family therapy, the impact of divorce, social, racial, cultural, economic, religious, and gender dynamics in family systems. Managing high conflict families, parental alienation, child abuse and neglect allegations, and domestic violence are also explored in the context of developing therapeutic interviewing techniques with various family members.

Module 4- 10 contact hours. Jurisprudence and Ethical Issues in Child and Family Investigations.
Faculty Instructor: Amos D. Martinez, Ph.D., MPA, MCJ, MSW, LCSW

This course examines regulatory and ethical issues involved in Child and Family Investigations. Confidentiality, privileged communications, dual relationships, child abuse reporting, record-keeping, and duty to warn matters are reviewed in the context of developing an ethical-decision making strategy. Selected case studies of grievances filed against CFI practitioners are analyzed and various strategies for avoiding malpractice or grievance actions are presented.
